Protect Your Home. Power Your Life.

Old ceramic fuses and rewireable boards are a safety risk and a fire hazard. Upgrade to modern standards with full safety switch protection and commercial-grade components for total peace of mind.

Is Your Switchboard a Hidden Risk?

Technology has changed. Has your switchboard kept up?

Many homes on the Gold Coast are still running on electrical systems installed 30 or 40 years ago. Back then, a household might have run a fridge, a washing machine, and a CRT TV. Today, we demand massive power for air conditioning, induction cooktops, pool pumps, and multiple computers.

If your switchboard hasn't been upgraded, it likely wasn't built to handle this modern load—turning the heart of your electrical system into its weakest link.

The 3 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Retiring

You Have "Rewireable" Ceramic Fuses

If you have to physically pull out a fuse carrier and wrap wire around it when power blows, your board is outdated. These fuses are designed to protect wires from melting, not to protect people from electrocution. They are slow to react and offer zero protection against earth leakage faults.

Missing or Incomplete Safety Switches (RCDs)

A modern switchboard features Safety Switches (RCDs) on every circuit. This device monitors the flow of electricity and cuts the power in milliseconds if it detects a leak—saving you from fatal electric shocks. If your board only has one safety switch (or none at all), your family is at risk.

The "Asbestos" Factor

Many older switchboards (pre-1990) are mounted on backing panels containing asbestos. While safe if left undisturbed, they cannot be drilled into for new smart meters or solar connections without releasing hazardous fibres. We safely remove and dispose of these panels as part of every upgrade.

The Evolved Safety Standard

We don’t just "fix" your switchboard. We upgrade your home’s entire safety profile.

When it comes to electricity, "good enough" isn't good enough. We replace your outdated board with a commercial-grade, fully compliant distribution board designed to protect your family and your appliances for decades to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If your home was built before the year 2000, the answer is likely yes.

Modern solar inverters require current circuit protection standards (AS/NZS 3000) that old ceramic fuses simply cannot meet. Additionally, most old boards physically lack the space for the new solar metering and safety switches required by law. We will confirm this during our initial site inspection.

  • For a standard residential property on the Gold Coast, a full switchboard upgrade typically ranges between $1,500 and $3,000.

This covers the removal of your old fuses (and any asbestos panels), installation of a new enclosure, commercial-grade safety switches (RCBOs), and labour.

If you require a 3-phase upgrade or new mains cabling, costs will be higher, which we will quote upfront.

  • For most homes, the power will be off for approximately 4 to 8 hours.

We usually start at 7:00 AM and aim to have you back online by early afternoon. We coordinate closely with you to minimise disruption, ensuring your fridge and essential devices are back on as quickly as possible.

  • Likely, yes. Any major electrical work—like a switchboard upgrade or solar installation—often triggers the requirement for a digital smart meter under new energy rules. While we don't install the meter ourselves (that is done by your energy retailer’s contractor), our upgrade prepares your board to be "smart meter ready," ensuring the transition is smooth.

  • Absolutely. A modern, compliant switchboard is a significant "green flag" for building inspectors and potential buyers. It signals that the property is safe, well-maintained, and ready for modern technology like EV chargers and induction cooktops without requiring immediate, expensive electrical work.

  • This is very common in Gold Coast homes built before 1990. Our team is trained and equipped to safely remove and dispose of asbestos backing panels in accordance with safety regulations. We handle the entire hazardous removal process as part of your upgrade package, so you don’t need to hire a separate contractor.
